Cubase does not launch / "Unrecoverable Error" with "Error code: 0x2"

Problem

When Cubase is launched, the startup process is interrupted with the following error message:

Unrecoverable Error

The application has to be shut down because of a serious graphic driver related issue.
If this problem persists please write down the following error code and contact Steinberg Technical Support. 
Error code = 0x2

Background

The issue occurs when the “Smooth Motion” feature is enabled in the Global Settings of the Nvidia App on RTX 40-series (and newer) graphics cards.

Solution

  • Open the Nvidia App.
  • Go to the section "Graphics" on the left.
  • Switch to the tab "Global Settings".
  • Set „Smooth Motion“ to "Off".

If you want to use this feature in specific applications, such as video games, you can re-enable it under “Program Settings” for selected programs.
