In Cubase, monitoring means listening to the input signal while preparing to record or while recording.
The following ways of monitoring are available:
Via Cubase.
Externally by listening to the signal before it reaches Cubase.
By using ASIO Direct Monitoring.
This is a combination of both other methods.
