You can use the internal polyphonic synthesizer of Vocoder to create a vocoder effect without an additional carrier signal.

Prerequisite

Your project contains an audio track with audio material that is suited to serve as a modulator source; for example, a voice sample.

Note

The modulator source can be audio material from any audio track. If your audio hardware allows for a low input latency, you can also use a live audio source routed to an audio track.

Procedure

  1. Select Vocoder as an insert effect for the audio track with the modulator signal.
  2. On the Vocoder plug-in panel, make sure MIDI mode is set to External.
    MIDI mode set to External
  3. Select a MIDI track.

This can be an empty MIDI track or a MIDI track containing data. To use Vocoder in real time – as opposed to a recorded part playing it – the track must be record-enabled for the Vocoder plug-in to receive the MIDI output.

  4. Route the output of the MIDI track to the MIDI input of the Vocoder plug-in.

Result

When playing the modulated synthesizer signal via the MIDI track, a typical vocoder effect is created.
