HALion Sonic Play is a music workstation with more than 2,000 instruments for a wide range of genres.
HALion Sonic Play replaces the previous HALion Sonic Selection in-app purchase, offering more presets and features. If you bought HALion Sonic Selection in the past, it will remain available next to HALion Sonic Play.
Key Switches
Colored keys indicate special functionality, such as keys that switch the articulation or arpeggiator pattern when or while pressed. There are two types of key switch presets: Some presets have key switch keys that need to be held down while playing regular notes, while others just need to be pressed once to enable their sample.
Quick Controls Page
The parameters that the eight quick control knobs adjust depend on the selected preset. Double tap any knob to reset it to its default value. In the center, the waveform view displays the live shape of the audio output.
To save your modified preset, go to the “My Presets” folder and tap the Save button at the bottom of the list.
Arpeggiator Page
The Arpeggiator page contains the following controls:
- Arp On/Off
-
Activates/Deactivates the arpeggiator.
- Hold
-
If enabled, prevents the phrase from stopping or changing when the keys are released.
- Time
-
Adjusts the tempo scale, with values ranging from 1/128 to 4/4, which is automatically synced to the tempo of Cubasis.
- Random
-
Randomizes the settings for the arpeggiator. If the lock icon next to the Length control is enabled (locked), the length is not randomized, which is useful for generating random phrases of a given length.
- Copy & Paste
-
Allows you to copy the current arpeggiator settings and paste them into a different preset, or into the same at a later point in time.
- Reset
-
Resets all arpeggiator settings to their default values.
- Steps
-
The number of steps is configured via the Length control. For each step, a vertical bar allows you to adjust its velocity. Double tap it to quickly set it to zero (off) and maximum (loud). Slide across the velocity bars horizontally to draw a velocity curve. The number above the bar is the transposition. Tap and slide it to adjust the step’s note height. During playback, a small dot below the bar indicates the currently played step.
- Length
-
Specifies the number of steps, which defines the length of the phrase. The small lock icon lets you exclude the length from randomization, which means that tapping Random leaves the length unchanged.
- Mode
-
Determines the order in which the notes are played back.
- Restart
-
-
If this is set to Off, the phrase runs continuously and does not restart at chord or note changes.
-
New Chord restarts the phrase on new chords.
NoteThe phrase does not restart upon notes that are played legato.
-
New Note restarts the phrase with each new note that you play.
-
Sync to Host aligns the phrase with the beats and measures of your host application each time that you start the transport.
-
- Octave
-
Extends phrase playback to higher or lower octaves. Positive settings extend the playback to higher octaves, and negative settings to lower octaves. For example, a value of +1 first plays the phrase in the octave range that you originally played. Then, it repeats the phrase one octave higher.
- Swing
-
Shifts the timing of even-numbered steps to create a swing feel. Negative values shift the timing backward, and the notes are played earlier. Positive values shift the timing forward, and the notes are played later.
- Gate
-
Allows you to shorten or lengthen the notes of the phrase. At a value of 100%, the notes play with their original gate length.
- Velocity
-
Allows you to raise or lower the note-on velocities of the phrase. At a value of 100%, the notes are played with their original velocity.
