For example, you can create a custom character style with wide letter spacing and then apply that character style to selected words. Unlike paragraph styles, character styles do not have to apply to whole text items or paragraphs in text frames.

• You can open the Character Styles dialog by choosing Library > and thenCharacter Styles.

The Character Styles dialog contains the following sections and options:

1. Character styles list

   Contains all the character styles in the project.

   The action bar at the bottom of the list contains the following options:

   • New: Creates a new character style with default settings.

   • New from Selection: Creates a copy of an existing character style that you can edit separately from the original.

   • Save as Default: Saves the selected character style to your user library, allowing you to use it in multiple projects. Appears as for character styles saved as default.

   • Revert to Factory: Removes all your changes to the selected character style, returning it to its saved settings.

   • Delete: Deletes the selected character style.

     Note

     You cannot delete predefined character styles or any character style that is currently used in your project.

2. Name

   Allows you to enter a name for new character styles or edit the name of existing paragraph styles.

3. Character style options

   Allow you to change parameters of the character style, such as changing the font, making the font bold, changing the size of the font, and changing the letter or word spacing. You can also make the font in paragraph styles appear underlined or overlined, and change the vertical alignment of characters.

4. Color options

   Allow you to change the foreground and background colors of the character style.

5. OpenType features

   Allows you to manage OpenType font features for the character style; for example, if you want to use both small caps and regular text in the same paragraph.

   Each OpenType font feature in the list has a checkbox that allows you to enable/disable the corresponding feature.

   The action bar at the bottom of the list contains the following options:

   • Add Feature: Allows you to select an OpenType feature from the menu. The number of OpenType features available depends on the selected font.

   • Delete Feature: Deletes the selected OpenType feature.
