You can disable auto-save completely; for example, if it is significantly affecting the performance of a large project.

Procedure
  1. Press Ctrl/Cmd-, to open Preferences.
  2. In the category list, click General.
  3. In the Files section, deactivate Auto-save every [n] minutes.
  4. Click Apply, then Close.
