The chord symbols popover allows you to input chord symbols with any combination of components, using either the computer keyboard, the Keyboard panel, or a MIDI keyboard.

You can open the chord symbols popover in Write mode in any of the following ways when either an item is selected or the caret is active:

  • Press Shift-Q.

  • In the Notations toolbox, click Popovers , then Chord Symbols .

  • Select an existing chord symbol and press Return.

  • Choose Writeand thenCreate Chord Symbol.

The chord symbols popover comprises the following:

  1. Popover handle

    Allows you to move the popover vertically by clicking and dragging.

  2. Popover icon

    Identifies the chord symbols popover. Matches the corresponding button in the Notations toolbox on the right of the window.

  3. Popover entry field

    Allows you to enter chord symbols.

    Tip
    • You can combine multiple entries to create more complex chord symbols.

    • To input a parenthesized chord symbol, enclose its entry in round brackets, such as (Cmaj7).

    • The appearance of the resulting chord symbols depends on your settings in the Chord Symbols Options dialog. The structure of your entry in the chord symbols popover is not considered. For example, entering a C major chord as C, Cmaj, or CM results in the same chord symbol.

  4. Chord symbol line number

    Identifies the current chord symbol line number.

  5. Chord symbol line controls

    Allow you to change the chord symbol line number using the mouse.

  6. Local/Global indicator

    Indicates whether you are inputting local or global chord symbols. Allows you to change the scope using the mouse.
