When multiple adjacent players hold the same instrument, you can group them so that there is only one instrument name for all staves with the instrument number shown beside each individual staff. You can group the instrument names of single players independently of section players.

By default, every staff is shown with its own staff label, including the appropriate instrument name.

Procedure

  1. Press Ctrl/Cmd-Shift-E to open Engraving Options.
  2. In the category list, click Staff Labels.
  3. In the Numbering section, choose Group between staves for the following options, individually or together:
    • Staff labels for identical adjacent instruments held by single players

    • Staff labels for identical adjacent instruments held by section players

  4. Choose one of the following options for Position of instrument names for grouped staff labels:
    • Center instrument name vertically

    • Align instrument name with first staff

  5. Click Apply, then Close.

Result

One instrument name is shown for all identical adjacent instruments held by the corresponding type of players in all layouts project-wide. It appears either justified between the staves or aligned with the first staff.
