Hiding/Showing ties across beat boundaries

You can change whether notes that span beat boundaries are notated as tie chains or single notes in each flow independently; for example, to show half notes over half-bars, instead of two tied quarter notes.

Procedure

  1. Press Ctrl/Cmd-Shift-N to open Notation Options.
  2. In the Flows list, select the flows in which you want to hide/show ties across beat boundaries.

    By default, only the current flow is selected when you open the dialog. You can select other flows by clicking Select All in the action bar, clicking and dragging across multiple flows, Shift-clicking adjacent flows, and Ctrl/Cmd-clicking individual flows.

  3. In the category list, click Note Grouping.
  4. Change the settings as required.

    There are separate options for ties across beat boundaries in time signatures with and without a half-bar, for notes followed by rests, and for ties in syncopated rhythm patterns.

  5. Click Apply, then Close.

Result

Notes are notated as either tie chains or single notes in the corresponding contexts in the selected flows.

Tip

You can also force the duration of individual notes/rests to specify their notation.

Example

  • Notes starting at the start of the bar or the half-bar of multiple beats in duration affects the dotted half note in the first bar.

  • Notes starting on a beat followed by a rest in the middle of the beat affects the dotted quarter note in the second bar.
