You can change your default settings for whether notes and shadow notes play back as you input or select them. By default, notes are played back with the prevailing dynamic, but you can set a fixed volume instead.
Procedure
- Press Ctrl/Cmd-, to open Preferences.
- In the category list, click Note Input and Editing.

In the Note Input section, in the Auditioning subsection, activate/deactivate the following options, individually or together:

Play notes during note input and selection

Play changes of shadow note pitch in pitch before duration input
For example, deactivate this option to hear only the final notes that you input when using pitch before duration.

Choose the volume that you want to use for notes during note input/selection.

To use a fixed volume, activate Use fixed volume to play selected notes, then change the value in the value field.

To use the prevailing dynamic, deactivate Use fixed volume to play selected notes.

In the Mouse Input subsection, activate/deactivate Play shadow note pitch.
For example, activate this option to hear notes as you move your mouse pointer over staves during note input.
- Click Apply, then Close.
