You can create manual cutaways on any staff and at any position within bars; for example, to start a cutaway mid-bar or to align the cutaways of two staves with different music.

Manual cutaways are layout-specific, meaning each layout can have manual cutaways at different rhythmic positions.

Prerequisite

We recommend that you have already input your music.

Procedure
  1. In Write mode, open the layout in which you want to create manual cutaways.
  2. Create a manual cutaway in one of the following ways:
    • To cut away regions manually, select items that span the required duration on each staff, then choose Editand thenNotationsand thenStaffand thenCreate Manual Cutaway.

    • To create manual cutaway starts, select an item at the required rhythmic position on each staff, then choose Editand thenNotationsand thenStaffand thenCreate Start Cutaway.

    • To create manual cutaway ends, select an item at the required rhythmic position on each staff, then choose Editand thenNotationsand thenStaffand thenCreate End Cutaway.

    Tip

You can also choose these options from the context menu.

  3. Optional: Customize the manual cutaways in any of the following ways:
    • To override your per-layout setting for automatically allowing each staff of grand staff instruments to be cut away independently of each other, select the manual cutaway start signposts, then in the Properties panel, activate Applies to all staves in the Cutaways group.

    • To override automatic cutaways until the next manual cutaway change or the end of the flow, select the required manual cutaway start/end signposts, then in the Properties panel, activate Applies until next manual cutaway change in the Cutaways group.

Result

Manual cutaways are created on each selected staff. Manual cutaway regions span the total selected duration across all selected staves.

In layouts where automatic cutaways are enabled, staves that would otherwise appear cut away automatically remain visible between cutaway end positions and the following music.

Manual cutaway start/end positions are indicated by signposts, which you can hide/show at any time.

Note
  • Staves containing music can be cut away by manual cutaways. This is because in the following circumstances, manual cutaway start positions apply until the next manual cutaway end position or the end of the flow, whichever comes first:

    • When Applies until next manual cutaway change is enabled for manual cutaway signposts

    • In layouts where automatic cutaways are disabled

  • You can change whether manual cutaways apply to all staves belonging to the same instrument, or only the top staff, in Preferencesand thenNote Input and Editingand thenEditing.

  • Cutaways cannot appear in layouts where multi-bar rests are shown.

  • Bracket and barline changes do not appear on systems with cutaway staves.
