You can set all HALion-related MPE parameters in the MPE editor.

Procedure
  1. Open the MPE editor.
  2. Activate the Enable MPE Handling button in the top right corner.

In the Slot Rack, the MIDI icon of the program slot is displayed with a magenta background. This indicates that this slot acts as master channel.

  3. Enter the number of member channels that you want to use in the Member Channels value field.

If you want to work with two MPE zones, specify the number of member channels both in the Lower Zone section and the Upper Zone section. The maximum number of member channels when using one zone is 15, and when using two zones, it is 14.

In the Slot Rack, the member channels are greyed out to indicate that they are used for MPE.

  4. Specify the pitchbend range for the master channel in the PB Range Master value field.

By default, the value is set to ±2 semitones, to match the traditional MIDI pitch bend behavior.

If you want to work with two MPE zones, specify the number of member channels both in the Lower Zone section and the Upper Zone section.

  5. Specify the pitchbend range for the member channels in the PB Range Member value field.

The appropriate value depends on your external MPE controller that you are using. Make sure to use the same pitch bend range for the member channels in HALion and the MPE controller.

    Note

If the pitch bend ranges do not match, your pitch movements will be scaled incorrectly, causing notes to bend far too much or barely at all, making the instrument sound out of tune and unplayable.

If you want to work with two MPE zones, adjust this parameter both in the Lower Zone section and the Upper Zone section.

  6. In the rows below, enter the controllers that you want to receive in the MIDI CC field, and specify the target Note Expression controllers in the Note-Expression field.
    Note

If you are using HALion in Cubase or Nuendo, the translation of MIDI controllers into Note Expression controllers can be performed within the sequencer, by configuring a corresponding Note Expression input device. In this case, HALion receives Note Expression events rather than MPE events from Cubase/Nuendo and you do not have to set up the MPE editor in HALion.

  7. Optional: Adjust the Smoothing and Min/Max parameters.
  8. In the modulation matrix, add the Note Expression controllers that you want to use as modulation sources, assign the desired modulation destinations, and adjust the modulation depth.
Result

As a result, incoming MPE is translated into Note Expression. You can start playing and benefit from per-note expressive control.
