macOS: Cubase cannot start due to HALion Sonic SE error

Problem

The following error message appears when Cubase is launched:

Background

An outdated version of HALion Sonic SE is still installed. This prevents Cubase from starting because it is no longer compatible with newer Cubase versions.

Solution

  • Go to this directory:
    /Library/Application Support/Steinberg/Components
  • Delete the file "HALion Sonic SE.vst3"

After deleting the file, Cubase should no longer crash on launch.
Deleting the file "HALion Sonic SE.vst3" will not affect a newer HALion Sonic 7 installation.
